What’s one thing you’re learning right now — professionally or personally?
Retirement is fabulous!
In your view, what makes a truly effective board member?
Preparation. Listening. Advising, not directing.
Beach, mountains, city, or countryside — what’s your ideal getaway?
House on the Jourdan River.
What’s a small daily habit that makes a big difference for you?
Light exercise. No need to ever run a marathon (why start now?)!
What’s a book every board member should read?
Jim Collins' "Good to Great" (even though some of the companies are no longer great). Specifically, see his answer in the FAQ section to "What is the role of the board of directors in a transformation from good to great?"
What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?
Two: 1) Don't send an angry email late at night. 2) Someone gets to be first. Someone has to be last. That's just the way it is.
In your experience, what differentiates great board chairs?
Encourage the board to speak up.
If you had an extra free hour every day, how would you spend it?
Reading.
What’s the most unforgettable trip or experience you’ve ever had?
Africa. So nice, we did it twice.
