If you could give yourself advice on your first day as a board member, what would it be?

Listen, learn, be thoughtful and help. Do the work in advance, know the markets, understand the competitive landscape, fully understand the strengths/weaknesses of your company and its peers, dig into the details, and be an information giver coupled with insightful corporate governance to tackle any topic.

From your perspective, what are some key traits that the most effective board members possess?

An effective board member is always in the process of learning, evolving, listening to your peers, and doing the work in advance. They are thoughtful, prepared, and always with good intentions to do the right the thing for the company, employees, shareholders and the community. They always check their ego at the door and sit on the board for altruistic reasons - to help the company succeed and thrive.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?

Your success is the result of the effort you put forth.
