Professional Title

Former CFO; current board director and audit chair, private company

What’s one thing you’re learning right now — professionally or personally?

Given that I recently retired, I'm learning to balance continuous learning with taking time to enjoy family, friends, and everyday life.

In your view, what makes a truly effective board member?

Demonstrating integrity towards the company and fellow directors, along with staying current on industry trends that are specific to the company you serve.

Beach, mountains, city, or countryside — what’s your ideal getaway?

Mountains during the day and then head into the city at night!

What’s a small daily habit that makes a big difference for you?

I begin my day with a challenging workout. It helps set the tone for the day, gives me energy, and clarity. I've held this habit for over 30 years!

What’s a book every board member should read?

Speaking of habits from the question above.....Atomic Habits is a book I refer to often. The book provides a strong framework for building good habits, continuous learning, and assistance with making good decisions. All three of these components are needed when agreeing to serve on a board.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?

I have to borrow from Stephen Covey, seek first to understand, then to be understood. Not only did I read about it in his book, but several of my mentors have underscored two components of this principle....empathy and listening before speaking.

In your experience, what differentiates great board chairs?

A great board chair communicates clearly, keeps the members informed, and listens to differing opinions. Demonstrating these traits helps build trust and collaborative committees.

If you had an extra free hour every day, how would you spend it?

I would spend the hour everyday writing a book about my life. The end goal would be to share the book with young girls and their mothers with the hopes that both mom and daughter would be inspired to dream big!

What’s the most unforgettable trip or experience you’ve ever had?

Our family trip to Barcelona with a side trip to Pamplona to watch the Running of the Bulls. I actually had plans to run with the bulls, but after seeing the narrow streets and the angry bulls, I watched the race from an apartment balcony. It was so exhilarating to watch!
